25% of the world's insecticides and 10% of the world's pesticides are used on cotton.
The top seven pesticides used in cotton production contain what the EPA calls "Unknown" human carcinogens.
It takes roughly 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to grow enough cotton to make just one tee shirt.
In 2003, fifty five million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on 12.8 million acres of conventional cotton in America alone. These chemicals contaminate ground water, livestock, air quality and harm field workers.
Cotton pesticides are often broad spectrum organophosphates, compounds originally created as toxic nerve agents during World War II.
