Why Organic
- 25% of the world's insecticides and 10% of the world's pesticides are used
on cotton.
- The top seven pesticides used in cotton production contain what the EPA calls "Unknown" human
carcinogens.
- It takes roughly 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to grow enough cotton to make
just one tee shirt.
- In 2003, fifty five million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on 12.8 million
acres of conventional cotton in America alone. These chemicals contaminate ground water,
livestock, air quality and harm field workers.
- Cotton pesticides are often broad spectrum organophosphates, compounds originally
created as toxic nerve agents during World War II.
